An Inspirational Addition to the Centre of Bury St Edmunds
A new mural in the centre of Bury St Edmunds has quickly become more than just a piece of public art — it is a celebration of the town’s identity, history and community spirit. Inspired by local heritage and designed to brighten a once overlooked space, the mural has given residents something they can feel proud of and connect with every day. Projects like this help bring people together, spark conversations and create a stronger sense of belonging, especially in a town where local history and community life are so important to residents.
The mural concept was inspired by the well-known phrase “A Jewel In The Crown of Suffolk”, a saying closely associated with Bury St Edmunds and instantly recognisable to local residents. The design also incorporates two flowers with strong local significance, the St Edmunds Rose and the Suffolk Oxlip, both representing the town and wider county of Suffolk.
The mural was positioned within a passageway that connects the historic heart of the town with the modern Arc shopping centre, the mural reflects the link between Bury’s rich history and its continuing development.
Delivering the project involved securing permissions from private landlords, applying for planning consent and temporary footpath closures with local authorities, designing the mural artwork, commissioning a professional street artist and managing the site throughout installation. A key part of the process was engaging with local residents and businesses, explaining the project as work progressed and involving the community as much as possible to ensure the mural felt connected to the people who use the space every day.
